Everything You Need to Know About Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)

FAQs

What is Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)?

Scalp Micropigmentation, or SMP, is a non-surgical cosmetic treatment that places tiny pigment impressions into the scalp to replicate the look of natural hair follicles. It can create the appearance of a shaved head, reduce visible scalp, add the look of density, and blend thinning areas.

Is Scalp Micropigmentation permanent?

SMP is semi-permanent. It can last several years, but the pigment may gradually soften or fade depending on your skin type, lifestyle, sun exposure, and aftercare. A refresh session may be needed in the future.

How long does SMP last?

Most clients can expect SMP to last around *4–6 years* before a refresh may be needed. Some clients may need a touch-up sooner depending on skin type, sun exposure, pigment retention, and how the treatment was originally placed.

Does SMP fade badly?

SMP should fade gradually and evenly when done correctly. Poor technique, pigment placed too deep, or overly dense work can sometimes lead to blue, grey, or patchy fading. The goal is to create a result that fades softly and still looks natural over time.

How many sessions do I need?

Most SMP treatments are completed over *2–3 sessions*. The first session builds the foundation, the second session adds density and blending, and a third session may be needed depending on your skin, hair loss pattern, and desired result.

How long is each treatment?

Each session usually takes around *2–4 hours*, depending on the area being treated. Larger areas such as shaved head SMP may take longer, while smaller density or scar camouflage treatments may be shorter.

How far apart are the sessions?

Session 2 is usually booked around *2 weeks after Session 1. If a third session is required, it is usually booked around **1 month after Session 2* so the scalp can heal and the pigment can settle properly.

Will SMP look natural?

Yes, when done correctly, SMP should look soft, natural, and realistic. Dot size, pigment colour, spacing, density, and hairline design are matched to your skin tone, hair colour, age, and hair loss pattern.

Does SMP look real?

A well-executed SMP treatment should look natural in real life, not just in photos. The key is subtle density, soft impressions, natural hairline design, and a result that still looks believable under different lighting.

Does SMP grow hair?

No. SMP does not grow new hair or replace hair follicles. ICan SMP damage hair follicles?

Can SMP damage hair follicles?

No, SMP does not damage hair follicles when performed correctly. The pigment is placed shallow in the skin and does not interfere with natural hair growth.

Is SMP suitable for men and women?

Yes. SMP can be suitable for men and women experiencing thinning hair, visible scalp, receding hairlines, crown thinning, alopecia, scars, or reduced density after a hair transplant.

Is SMP suitable for all skin types?

SMP can work across most skin types, but the technique may need to be adjusted. Oily skin, dry skin, sensitive skin, sun exposure, and pigment retention can all affect how the result heals and lasts.

Is SMP better than a hair transplant?

SMP and hair transplants solve hair loss in different ways. SMP is non-surgical, has minimal downtime, and creates the appearance of density or a shaved head. Hair transplants move real follicles, but can be costly, invasive, and limited by donor hair availability.

Can SMP help after a hair transplant?

Yes. SMP can help add the appearance of density after a hair transplant, especially if the scalp is still visible or the transplant result is not as dense as expected.

Can SMP cover scars?

Yes. SMP can help camouflage suitable scars, including some hair transplant scars. Suitability depends on the scar’s colour, texture, depth, and how well it has healed.

Does SMP hurt?

Most clients describe the discomfort as mild to moderate, often around *2–5 out of 10*. Some areas, such as the hairline and temples, may feel more sensitive.

Are there side effects?

Side effects are usually minor and temporary. You may experience mild redness, tenderness, itchiness, or slight swelling after treatment. These usually settle within a few days.

Is SMP invasive?

SMP is minimally invasive. It does not involve surgery, cutting, stitches, or moving hair follicles. Pigment is placed into the upper layers of the scalp using specialised equipment.

Do I need to cut my hair before SMP?

For shaved-head SMP, the hair usually needs to be kept very short so the pigment blends naturally. For density SMP, you usually do *not* need to shave your hair, as the treatment is performed between your existing hair.

Will shaving damage the SMP?

No. Once healed, shaving or washing your head will not damage the SMP because the pigment sits under the skin. Many shaved head SMP clients shave regularly to maintain the best blend.

Do I need to keep the shaved look?

For full shaved head SMP, yes, the hair is usually kept very short so the SMP blends naturally with your real hair. For density SMP, you can usually keep your existing hairstyle because the treatment is placed between the hair.

Is SMP obvious when my hair grows out?

It depends on the treatment type. For shaved head SMP, longer hair can make the contrast more noticeable. For density SMP, the aim is to reduce scalp contrast so the result can still blend with existing hair at normal lengths.

How should I protect my SMP from sunlight?

Sun exposure can cause pigment to fade faster. Once healed, protect your scalp with sunscreen, a hat, or by limiting direct sun exposure, especially during strong UV conditions.

What does bad SMP look like?

Bad SMP can look too dark, too dense, too sharp, too low, or too perfectly lined up. Common signs include harsh hairlines, blue or grey pigment, solid-looking density, large dots, or a painted “helmet” effect.

Why does some SMP turn blue or grey?

This usually happens when pigment is placed too deep, the wrong pigment is used, or the work is too dense. When done correctly, SMP should stay within a natural tone and fade gradually rather than shifting dramatically.

What is the biggest mistake people make with SMP?

The biggest mistake is chasing too much density too quickly. A natural result is built gradually. Overly dark or dense work may look strong at first, but it often ages poorly.

How should a natural hairline be designed?

A natural hairline should suit your age, face shape, hair loss pattern, and goals. It should not be perfectly straight, too low, or too sharp. Softer, slightly irregular hairlines usually look more realistic over time.

What separates good SMP from great SMP?

Good SMP may look fine in photos. Great SMP still looks natural in real life, close-up, and under different lighting. The difference comes down to subtle density, natural dot placement, realistic hairline design, and how well the result ages.

Why do people need SMP correction work?

Correction work is usually needed when SMP has been placed too dark, too dense, too low, too sharp, or too deep. Some cases can be softened and blended, while others may need laser removal before correction.

Can bad SMP be fixed?

In many cases, yes. Bad SMP can often be improved through softening, blending, redesigning the hairline, or adjusting density. In some cases, laser removal may be needed before correction work can be done properly.

Can SMP be removed if I change my mind?

Yes, SMP can usually be lightened or removed with laser treatment. Removal is generally considered when pigment is too deep, too dark, badly placed, or not suitable for correction alone.

What does the SMP procedure include?

Your treatment starts with a consultation to assess your hair loss, scalp, goals, and suitability. A personalised plan is then created based on your head shape, skin tone, hair colour, hairline, and density needs.

Do I need time off work?

Most clients do not need major time off work. Redness is usually temporary and settles within 24–72 hours. You will need to follow aftercare instructions for the first few days.

Will people know I had SMP done?

Fresh SMP can look slightly darker at first, then softens as it heals. Once settled, the goal is for the result to look natural, so people notice you look better without knowing exactly why.

Can SMP help with thinning hair?

Yes. Hair Density SMP can reduce the contrast between your scalp and existing hair, making thinning areas look fuller and denser. This can be suitable for men and women with visible scalp or reduced density.

Is there aftercare?

Yes. Aftercare is important. You will usually need to avoid washing the scalp, sweating, swimming, sun exposure, shaving, and applying products for the first few days. Full aftercare instructions are provided after your session.

How much does SMP cost?

Cost depends on the treatment area, hair loss level, and number of sessions required. At Full Hair SMP, pricing is discussed during consultation so we can recommend the right option for your goals. Payment plan options may also be available.
